“Illuminated,” an installation at the OL Guild in Valley Junction in West Des Moines, Iowa, debuted in April 2019. The former gas station offered public views of a private space that Julia transformed into a 1970s inspired dining room. The nostalgic furnishings provided an intimate space where free potluck dinner parties were held on Tuesday evenings. The space was under constant change with lighting and temperature as the day moved into night. Because of the events, the space evolved to illustrate the before, during, and after stages of each dinner. Guests - both friends and strangers - shared memorable food and stories, and the residue and remnants of parties are seen in leftover food, dirty dishes, and empty glasses. The installation also served as the backdrop to Queen Kenzie’s hip hop video and Preston Mangum’s editorial photo shoot. Photographs are by Julia Franklin and Brittany Brooke Crow.
